Description: The role of the Histotechnologist is to perform all of the specialized procedures performed in the Histopathology lab. These technologists perform IHC and DIF procedures, Enzyme Histochemistry, grossing of small biopsies, and are involved in laboratory education. ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Embeds and properly orients surgical, autopsy and cytology cell block tissue for microtomy. Cuts routine tissue specimens according to defined protocols. Performs routine and special staining of microscopic tissue sections. Assists the Pathologist with OR frozen section cases. Depending on campus location may: Independently perform Immunoperoxidase staining, microtomy of FFPE tissue. Independently perform Direct Immunofluorescent staining, including flash freezing and cutting, of fresh biopsies. Procedures use both manual techniques and complex equipment. Prepare fresh tissue biopsies for enzyme histochemical procedures using cryotechniques. Performs and troubleshoots all enzyme histochemical procedures. Under the supervision of the pathologist performs grossing of small biopsies. Assists in teaching in the Histotechnologist school to include: Laboratory Demonstrations, Lectures, preparation for laboratory assignments.

Description: Under general supervision and following established procedures, obtains various venous and capillary blood specimens needed for laboratory tests. Responsible for order entry of test orders, specimen processing and preparation of specimens for transportation and distribution. Functions: Knowledge of reference sources for patient preparation and specimen collection and handling requirements to be able to assist other health care professionals. Documents and follows up on problems. Follows test cancellation policy including when to complete problem log and when to perform CTS (test cancellation). Knows when and where to look for specimens and how and when to add tests to previously collected specimens. Maintains minimum supply levels. Is familiar with reference materials and on line manuals. Arranges for specimen transport using established procedure. Completes MCE. Aliquots and pHs 24 hour urine specimens.
